The photo was taken in a bazaar near St Stephan’s Square in Vienna, Austria.  It is called Donaunixenbrunnen, the Danube Mermaid Fountain.

In the painting, the viewer is pulled into the black pool in the lower corner and gently pulled out by the subject.  Then directed to continue through the painting by the background’s in-exact lines.  A natural pull like a gentle grade in front of you.  Aside from the shades of black, the only colors shades are the compliments orange and blue, a classic impressionistic technique to make colors stand out.  The background contains the arches of the windows and glass ceiling.  As part of the composition, the arches are essential; in the painting the crude lines and curves are used as guidance, almost sub consciously while focused on the foreground.
